My ‘Burn’ on Jim Rome

For those of you who aren’t ESPN fanatics, the television show “Jim Rome is Burning” airs each weekday at 4:30pm EST. This show is hosted by Jim Rome — that’s right, you guessed it — and he offers his slant on current sports issues, as well as engages in one-on-one conversations with columnists, professional athletes, or coaches.

I guess now would be a good time to offer this disclaimer: If you’re a fan of Jim Rome or his show, you might not want to read any further.

I am NOT a fan of “Jim Rome is Burning.” In fact, I wonder how a sports-juggernaut station like ESPN employs this clown. There are many reasons why I have such a distaste for this guy, but I will focus my anger on two main reasons: his continued failed attempts at being “hip” and “witty,” and his poor, elongated attacks on certain aspects of sports.

Stuart Scott, a Sportscenter anchor, is known for his postmodern approach to sports reporting. He is a perfect example of how you can be “cool” and report sports without the subject matter losing its validity or importance. Jim Rome, to be frank, sucks at this. From the moment his music is cued up to his “final burn,” Rome is simply a poor attempt at a comedic sports reporter. It might work for some, but the use of “dawg,” “peace,” and “chillin” doesn’t do it for me. Do some actual reporting, Jim, that way you don’t have to mask your lack of knowledge with your use of slang and jargon.

As stated, Jim’s other affliction is his poor, elongated attacks. Take the Fox television show, “Family Guy” for example: Peter often goes into flashbacks that offer absurd happenings that last a little too long, but they are funny and keep our attention. Jim Rome’s failed attempts are not funny — in fact, they are annoying.

I toughed through today’s show to refresh my memory of the flaws of Rome. I must admit, I considered having a drink about 8min into the episode. To ESPN: I’m sure you can find something better to air for a half-hour everyday. Get on that…”pronto.”
